The ability to effectively
control or "manage" anger is essential in all phases of our
lives. Whether as parents, employees, neighbors or responsible
citizens, it is of critical importance that we can control angry
feelings and avoid hurting others or ourselves. Feelings of anger
can lead to rage and result in irreparable harm. For example, a
perceived inability or unwillingness to control anger may result in:
All too often individuals
appear requesting help from a professional counselor only after an event
has already occurred that resulted in damage to their life or the lives
of others.
A skilled professional
counselor can offer immediate hope to those who are motivated to handle
anger appropriately. The counselor can demonstrate that by changing
thoughts and behaviors concerning anger, major changes can occur that
will produce a definite ability to control angry impulses. For example,
strategies can be learned and implemented to achieve the following:
-
correcting mental
distortions that lead to anger
-
identifying and
avoiding situations and people that can lead to anger
-
learning new conflict
resolution skills
-
more effectively coping
with stressors that can lead to anger
Through the process of
counseling, those who have been afflicted with feelings of anger and
rage can begin to assume responsibility for their thoughts, feelings and
behavior and can begin to live as healthy adults who are capable of
controlling their behavior.
