Be sure to have the full attention of the person you are talking to.
Make eye contact whenever possible. Make an introductory
request if necessary, such as "May I have your attention for a
moment?"
Speak clearly and
distinctly and use plain English.
Avoid the use of slang. Don't try to convey an attitude,
such as trying to sound "cool" or "smart".
Just be yourself and put getting your message across the first
priority.
Take a deep breath
to calm nervousness.
If you are tense or nervous, take a moment to take a deep breath
and calm yourself before beginning an important message.
Powerful emotions can interfere with your ability to
communicate. Try to achieve a state of calm before speaking.
Clear your mouth
before speaking.
Eating, smoking, chewing gum or candy and chewing on a pencil,
pen or toothpick create irritating distractions for the
listener. Keep your hands away from your face and mouth while
speaking.
Convey a positive
demeanor.
Try not to introduce your thoughts with negative phrases such as
"I may be wrong but ..." or "I'm not very good with
words but ..." that deflate the importance of your message and
undermine your credibility.
Energize your
message.
Say what is on your mind with conviction and certainty.
Display confidence.
Convey an attitude
of openness.
Accept questions and comments, but only after you have had a
chance to make your point clear. Do not accept interruptions
or side comments.
Ask for feedback.
Check to see that your message has been fully understood by
asking the receiver to succinctly restate the message.
Practice positive
and clear communication daily.
If positive communication becomes a daily goal your
communication skills will develop and grow over time and will yield
untold benefits.
